In 1991, Gideon Efrat wrote about the history of depicting soldiers in Israeli art, “… indeed, dozens of Israeli artists expressed, during the 1970s and ’80s, the demythologization of the Israeli soldier. This “secularization” is not just a provocative, avant-garde process of de-haloing, but a keen self-examination of a culture awakening from a sweet dream into an excruciating existence”.  Those lines can be related to Yair’s new solo exhibition in 12 Agripas Gallery, Jerusalem. This is his fifth solo exhibition, the next step following “Duel”, from March 2015, curated by Liav Mizrahi and presented in the same space. This current exhibition – “Duel 2 – Heroes” – has a title that ranges between pathos and irony, an angle Yair employs to investigate the Israeli male “hero” stereotype. The vast gap between this icon, and the journalist photographs of heroic paragons, and that of the reality he experiences.

In this exhibition, Yair brings together two different forms of expression – one of classic drawing, using pen, pencil, or charcoal on paper, and the other a computer-modified color sketch, a processed image of a digital photo. The works are created using various techniques, but all seem to mesh. As the artist himself states – “I had the feeling that a dialogue existed between the prints and the drawing, that there was a deep link between these two expressions, despite the essential difference in both work processes and outcomes. In retrospect, one could try and see the connection between the term ‘heroism’ to existence realized today, living in the country and its challenges. A reality within the tangle. In my works, this aspect is found in both figurative and abstract imagery”.
